Rachel Calof's Story:
Jewish Homesteader on the Northern Plains

by Sanford J. Rikoon
Indiana University Press: Bloomington, 1995

Translated from the Yiddish by Molly Shaw and the author's son Jacob Calof.

This was the true story of Rachel Calof, a pioneer woman who came to America from Russia in 1894 to marry a man whom she had never met. In an effort to improve their lives, she and her husband Abraham moved to North Dakota where they were given ownership of a parcel of land in exchange for its development. Life on the prairie proved to be difficult and even life-threatening for them at times. Their story was made a bit different by the fact that they were religious Jews...not your typical pioneer family!

This is a tale of trial and triumph. It proved to be a fascinating piece of American as well as little-known Jewish history. It's quite an absorbing read.
