Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

by John Berendt
Random House: New York, 1994

The author moves to Savannah, Georgia, to experience the life of this very unique southern town. Berendt describes such colorful people as party-giver JimWilliams, piano-playing bar owner Joe Odum, vivacious drag queen Lady Chablis, herbalist Minerva, city developer Leopold Adler, and the explosive young man Danny Hansford. With its own code of conduct unlike that of any other American or southern city, Savannah is depicted in a way that accepts its weaknesses with affection. Located somewhat away from through travel routes, this city has been able to rebuild its former beauty over the years without much change of innate characteristics.

The story is intriguing and well written. On audio, it’s delightful. I could not guess how the book would end. The author did a great job in making it read very much like a novel. I’d like to know how much of this story is real and how much is the author’s creation. What a collection of annoying, pretentious characters! Excuse me for a minute while I call my friend from Savannah to ask about some of those people . In the meantime, I suggest you read the book. :-)
